Environment Southland Environment Awards 2008
Environmental Innovator Award, Sponsored by the Invercargill Licensing Trust
Winner - Southland disABILITY Enterprises
Ltd.
"With its innovative approach to collecting and recycling
plastics, Southland disABILITY Enterprises is taking a major source of
environmental pollution out of the waste stream and turning it
into a profitable resource. Its work not only benefits the
environment and the schools that it partners with, it also
provides meaningful employment for those with disabilities.
Southland disABILITY Enterprises introduced plastic bag recycling at
Southland supermarkets and the demand for its service is so high
that some of its wheelie bins have to be emptied twice a week.
The bags are baled and sent to Christchurch to be made into
shipping pallets.
In the last three years, its partnership with Southland schools
to collect used baleage wrap has grown to involve 43 schools who
collect 100 tonnes of wrap a year. Schools receive half the
proceeds of selling the wrap that they collect – so far that has
amounted to $14,000, which is a lot of cheese rolls!
Initially the state of the wrap was a problem – it was
contaminated and proved difficult to clean. The solution turned
out to be an industrial size washing machine that washes the
wrap in plain water - no detergent – and it now fetches three
times the price in the Asian market.
Southland disABILITY Enterprises now runs a commercial collection service
that brings in 90 percent of the recyclables collected in
Invercargill; the material is sorted and sold – not only
providing income for the business but diverting hundreds of
tonnes of waste a year away from landfill, and creating a
valuable resource for manufacturers in New Zealand and overseas."*

Special Award, Sponsored by Environment
Southland’s councillors
Winner - Ian Beker

"Ian’s work as General Manager of
Southland disABILITY Enterprises has influenced the environmental
achievements of at least half of the nominees.
Ian wouldn’t claim any credit for
himself, but it is through his vision, his belief and his sheer
determination that Southland disABILITY Enterprises is able to provide an
extensive recycling service to businesses and the farming
sector, and at the same time offer meaningful employment to a
large number of the less advantaged members of our society.
Southland disABILITY Enterprises’ commercial
recycling service handles 90 percent of the recyclable material
collected in Invercargill – that’s hundreds of tonnes of
material each year that’s saved from going to our Southland
landfill, and instead is sold to manufacturers who turn it into
new products.
Ian impressed the judges as someone who stands head and shoulders above the rest – he sees a
problem and solves it – sees an opportunity and grabs it. Not
for himself, but for those he works with, and we’re all
benefiting from it."*
