Schools working in partnership with us, to reduce the blight of bale wrap.

A participating school collects the balewrap, and SDE sorts and processes the collected balewrap into compact bales for the recycling market.  As a partner, the participating school gets half the profits from the sale of the balewrap they collected.

All schools are welcome to participate.

Participating school responsibilities: Be responsible for getting balewrap in their area collected for recycling. This means

  • getting balewrap gathered and taken to SDE (This can be done a variety of ways – encourage/ask farmers take their balewrap to SDE

  • using your school as a drop-off point and then use other people who are making trips to town to take loads)

  • AND/OR Using your school as a drop-off point for farmers and then ask SDE to come and collect it from your school.

    • Note SDE transportation costs will be deducted from your share of the profits.

  • Ensuring your school’s name is attached/linked to all balewrap loads that you have organised. This enables SDE to keep a record of all the balewrap you collect, and hence all your profits.

The benefits of being a participating school:

  1. The profits gained can be used to help by the school in anyway you choose. They can assist with paying for school equipment, supplies, sports trips, or school camps etc.

  2. The scheme can be used to assist children’s learning about management, advertising, marketing and communications skills.

  3. The school’s relationship with the local community will be strengthened.

  4. The school will be helping the environment.

Case Study: Tokanui Area School have already been working with SDE. They have helped SDE fill a shipping container and in return will receive $1000.

Assistance in setting up your programme is provided by the following organisations:

Southland disABILITY Enterprises Ltd. will provide you with empty wool fadges to use for collecting balewrap.

Environment Southland can provide general local and environmental information about balewrap as well as background promotional material to the school.

Environmental expert “Brucie C Gull’ can also be called in to promote the value of recycling balewrap to the school and the SDE initiative.

Please support the organisations who support us.  Without them we couldn't do as much as we do.
