Until
mid 2011, SDE took old wooden pallets and various other sources of recyclable
wood, and turned them into high grade firewood and kindling. The
pallets were dismantled by hand, the wood de-nailed and then graded
into either firewood or kindling wood. Any boards that
were still
in good condition are put aside and made into second hand pallets.
Wood that was not suitable for resale was used to heat our main
premises.
We removed all nails using compressed air, and
ensured that all firewood was dry and that kindling was cut to a
uniform size. We had a splitting machine that did this
for us, and kindling was sold in bags of both five and ten kilo
sizes.
We produced and sold almost ten thousand bags
of kindling annually.
